Elements and Principles of Photography

1. Leading Lines- lines that lead your eyes to another object in the image








The road leads to the mountains in the background.

2. Vertical lines- Convey different moods in your photo




The vertical lines create a eerie mood in the picture.

3. Horizontal lines- act as dividing points














The lines divides the picture into many smaller pictures.

4- Diagonal Lines- Draws the attention of the looker


These lines make you think about the picture and the meaning.

5- Curved Lines- Add beauty and grace to a photo
 

The curved lines make the picture interesting and pretty.

6- Symmetrical balance- brings balance to the photo


 The picture is the same on both sides making it balance.


7- Asymmetrical balance- when one objects goes against multiple others

 There is one bigger object and many smaller objects going against each other.

8- Unity- when all elements of a picture work toward one goal





All the hands are in combine to make the picture bringing unity.

9- Variety- combining elements of art to make intricate and complex relationships
 The are many different donuts and they all look delicious.

10- Movement/rhythm- something moving in the photo

The picture looks like it is moving

11- Emphasis- a piece of the photo is given dominance
 The ladybug is dominant in this picture.

12- Proportion/scale- The size of everything in the picture
The cigarette is bigger then the people in this picture for a reason.

13- Repetition/ Pattern- when something that continues to repeat in the picture

The chairs just keep repeating.

14- Bird's eye view- picture taken from above
This shot is taken from above.

15- Worm's eye view- picture taken from below

This picture is taken from below.

16- Horizon line- shows how your picture is observed and taken
The picture is taken at the sunrise in the horizon.

17- Rule of thirds- makes the subject not in the middle of the picture
 The dog is off centered and therefore in the rule of thirds definition.

18- Framing- leads the eyes to the main focus of the picture

The picture is framed on the white house making it the main focus.

19- Simplicity- giving the main part of your picture more visual attention

The tree is obviously the main focus of this picture

20- Texture- eye catching, as if you can see how it feels
 
 You can see the texture of the rocks in this picture.
